The Mount Carmel 2020 Ask

January 22, 2020 | Didi Bacon

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20 (NIV)

This scripture is called the “great commission.”  It is great because it comes from God through Jesus.  It is a divine mandate.  It is a commission because it is directed at the church of Christ.  It is what Jesus followers are called to do in their lives of faith.  What does that mean for us as the community of Jesus followers who call ourselves the Mount Carmel Christian Church?  It means Loving God Loving People as we go, make disciples baptizing them and teaching them, relying on the Spirit of Jesus.  In practical terms this is what we are asking…

The Mount Carmel 2020 ask:

  1. To love God I will:
    • Learn and live scripture

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Tim 3:16-17)

    • Worship God by giving my best

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.  (Rom 12:1)

    • Celebrate when I witness God at work

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! (Phil 4:4)

    • Make prayer my first move

…pray continually (1 Thess 5:17)

    • Commit to being one in Christ

Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. (Eph 4:3)

    • Give in order to resource mission

You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God (2 Cor 9:11)

  1. To love people I will:
  • Be a promoter of belonging.

“I know your name and I am committed to you becoming a disciple of Jesus.”

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. (1 Thess 5:11)

    • Be a participant in serving.

“I will use my God gifts to bless others.”

Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good (1 Cor 12:7)

    • Be a pupil in training.

“I will learn to make Jesus followers who make Jesus followers.”

Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ (1 Cor 11:1)

The church is not the building or an event. The church is a family of Jesus followers.  Jesus followers committed to Loving God Loving People. Jesus followers who make Jesus followers who make Jesus followers.

Will you commit?
