One Word

January 7, 2021 | Didi Bacon

Happy New Year!

New Year means One Word for me.

Since 2017 I have been doing an exercise that I came across in a book, One Word That Will Change Your Life, by Jon Gordon, Dan Britton, and Jimmy Page.

Instead of coming up with resolutions or a list of goals for the year ahead, I seek out one word that captures it all.

One Word is easier to remember. One Word forces me to engage in a discipline that focuses on what God is leading me to in the new year. One Word is my way of living by faith with Jesus, my leader.

The way it works is that you follow three simple steps:
  1. Look in - find time to be quiet, evaluate the past, open up to the Lord.
  2. Look up - Ask God for your word through prayer, scripture, conversation with your community of faith.
  3. Look out - Identify your word, share it with your friends, keep it in front of you for the year.

Here have been my One Words over the years:
2017 - Cheerleader
2018 - Shepherd
2019 - Small
2020 - Execute

For 2021 my One Word is COACH. I will focus on giving what God has given me to those I am called to shepherd so that they might flourish/succeed in the “game” of life.

Alan Ahlgrim is the man who introduced me to this One Word discipline. Check out his BLOG post as he shares his Powerful Word for 2021. It is a blessing!
