A Way Out
May 7, 2019 | Timothy Peace
Presence with God presents a way out of our anxiety.
Jesus says “… do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matthew 6:34).
This idea of drawing one’s attention to today and letting tomorrow take care of itself is a good place for those of us with anxiety to begin.
It is far too easy to allow our minds to tailspin into patterns of catastrophizing and future forecasting, all the while letting the present pass us up.
To be sure, Jesus isn’t prescribing us a new self-help technique to make life easy. Instead, he’s teaching us to be present with God, to be present to the opportunities and challenges in front of us, and, hopefully, to learn to trust God rather than our might.
